Visiting the Arhuaco: A Journey Into The Heart Of The World

Introduction

Hidden within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia lives the Arhuaco people, an Indigenous community who have protected their culture, traditions and lands for generations.

For many travellers, Colombia is known for its coffee, beaches and colourful towns. Yet beyond the tourist trail lies an opportunity to experience a completely different perspective on life, nature and humanity.

Earlier this year we had the privilege of visiting the Arhuaco ourselves, spending time within their territory and meeting members of the community, including Jwikemy, whose generosity and wisdom left a lasting impression on us.

The Heart Of The World

The Arhuaco refer to the Sierra Nevada as the "Heart of the World".

Rising from the Caribbean coastline to snow-capped mountains, this remarkable region contains an incredible diversity of ecosystems, rivers, forests and wildlife.

For the Arhuaco, the mountains are not simply a place to live. They are sacred. Every river, tree and landscape forms part of a living system that must remain in balance.

This connection to nature is visible everywhere you go.

A Different Way Of Living

One of the things that struck us most was the pace of life.

Away from the constant notifications, schedules and distractions of modern society, there is space to listen, observe and connect.

The Arhuaco way of life is deeply rooted in responsibility, reciprocity and respect for both people and the environment.

Their traditions have been passed down through generations and continue to guide daily life today.

Visiting offers more than just an opportunity to see somewhere new.

It offers an opportunity to reflect on our own relationship with nature and the world around us.

Why Visit Through Ankabasi?

Ankabasi creates opportunities for visitors to respectfully engage with the Arhuaco community and experience life within their territory.

This is not a typical tourist excursion.

It is a chance to learn directly from the people who call the Sierra Nevada home, whilst supporting local initiatives and helping preserve traditional knowledge and culture.

For those seeking a more meaningful travel experience in Colombia, it offers something truly unique.

Our Experience

Our time with the Arhuaco remains one of the most memorable experiences of our travels.

Not because of luxury.

Not because of adventure.

But because of the people.

The conversations.

The perspectives.

And the reminder that there are still communities living in close relationship with the natural world.

The experience left us with a deeper appreciation for the land, the culture and the people behind the cacao we are fortunate enough to share.
