About Cacao

What/When/Where

What is Cacao?

Cacao, a delightful fruit from the cacao tree, serves as the foundation for the cocoa we recognize in popular chocolate brands. Yet, before it's roasted and transformed into the familiar cocoa, cacao holds a world of natural richness. The roasting process, while enhancing certain flavours, strips away a significant portion of its inherent benefits.

Historically, cacao has been much more than just a treat. It's a plant steeped in significance and respect for the wellness properties it carries. Over 5,000 years ago in South America, long before European explorers brought it to global attention in the 17th century, cacao was a centrepiece in sacred healing rituals. Its cultural imprint is so deep that legends tell of an Aztec emperor who would drink nothing but cacao. This profound reverence is reflected in its scientific name, Theobroma, aptly termed the "food of the gods."

Growing cacao isn't simple; it's an art. The trees seek a unique combination of conditions: consistent warmth, regular rain showers, ample humidity, nutrient-dense soil, and a shield from gusty winds. Their preferred home? The nurturing canopy of rainforests, primarily situated within a 10-degree band on either side of the equator.

A Guide for you

How to use Cacao

Traditional Method: Stovetop Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the Cacao

Depending on your intention, choose either 15g of cacao for daily enjoyment or 42g for a ceremonial dose. Grate or finely chop the cacao to ensure it integrates well with the liquid.

Step 2
Heat Your Liquid

In a pot, gently heat your choice of plant-based milk (e.g., almond, oat, or coconut milk) until it's just about to simmer. If you prefer a more traditional base, water can be used.

Step 3
Blend & Flavour

Gradually stir in the prepared cacao into the pot, ensuring it's completely dissolved. Sweeten with natural choices like raw honey, agave, date paste or maple syrup. To elevate your drink, sprinkle in spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, or a hint of vanilla.

Step 4
Serve & Enjoy!

Pour the rich cacao into your favourite mug, take a deep inhale of its comforting aroma, and savour its profound depth and benefits.

Quick Method: Blender Preparation
Step 1
Measure and Prepare Cacao

Decide between 15g for a daily dose or 42g for a ceremonial strength. Place your cacao in a high-speed blender.

Step 2
Add Hot Water

Pour hot (not boiling) water into the blender over the cacao. Blend until the cacao is thoroughly dissolved and the mixture is smooth.

Step 3
Incorporate Milk & Spices

Add your desired plant-based milk and any sweeteners or spices you fancy, such as agave, cinnamon, or a dash of cayenne for some heat. Blend until everything is well incorporated.

Step 4
Final Touch

For a hot drink, transfer the mixture to a pot and gently reheat on the stove. Alternatively, for a chilled version, pour over ice cubes. Either way, serve in a glass or mug, and immerse yourself in the luxurious taste of ceremonial cacao.

Why should you use it?
