50cm Traditional Mexican Molinillo

Handcrafted in Mexico by Maestro Juan Alonso Rodríguez

Each of our 50cm molinillos is individually handcrafted by Maestro Juan Alonso Rodríguez, a fifth-generation artisan whose family has dedicated decades to preserving the traditional craft of turning wood into authentic Mexican molinillos. Every piece is carefully shaped on a wood lathe, finished and decorated by hand, making each one unique.

A molinillo is one of Mexico's most iconic cacao tools. For generations it has been used to whisk hot cacao, creating the rich, velvety foam that has become an essential part of traditional Mexican cacao preparation. Rather than using a modern whisk or frother, the molinillo is rolled quickly between the palms of your hands, naturally aerating the drink and producing a beautiful layer of foam.

Perfect for larger preparations

This 50cm molinillo has been designed for preparing larger batches of cacao.

Whether you're making cacao for family and friends, hosting a gathering or facilitating a cacao ceremony, the longer handle makes it comfortable to use in deeper saucepans and larger pots while creating a smooth, creamy texture.

How to use

  1. Warm your cacao in a saucepan until fully melted and hot (do not boil).
  2. Place the molinillo into the saucepan.
  3. Hold the handle between both palms.
  4. Roll the handle back and forth rapidly while gently lifting and lowering the molinillo through the cacao.
  5. Continue for 30–60 seconds, or until a rich natural foam forms on the surface.
  6. Pour and enjoy.

The more you work the molinillo, the more air is incorporated into the cacao, producing the traditional silky foam that has been celebrated in Mexico for generations.

Handmade with care

Every molinillo is crafted from responsibly sourced wood and individually turned by hand, meaning no two pieces are exactly alike. Small differences in grain, colour and pattern are part of what makes every molinillo a genuine piece of Mexican craftsmanship.
