Autumn Golden Cacao: A Warming Seasonal Ritual

As the days become shorter and the air turns cooler, autumn naturally invites us to slow down, warm up and create space for small moments of comfort.

This golden cacao drink combines our Mexican Lavado cacao with turmeric, black pepper and natural sweetness to create a rich, earthy drink that feels made for the season.

Unlike traditionally fermented cacao, our Mexican Lavado is washed rather than fermented. This gives it a distinctive dark, nutty and deeply chocolatey character, with subtle coffee-like notes—but without the coffee. Its bold flavour works beautifully alongside the warmth of turmeric and vanilla.

Autumn Golden Cacao Recipe

Ingredients

  • 15–25g Mexican Lavado cacao
  • 200–250ml water or your favourite plant-based milk
  • ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • A small pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla powder
  • Honey or date powder, to taste
  • Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or ginger

Method

Gently warm the water or plant-based milk in a small saucepan without allowing it to boil.

Add the Lavado cacao, turmeric, black pepper and vanilla. Whisk until the cacao has melted and the drink becomes smooth and lightly frothy.

Taste before adding your chosen sweetener. A little honey creates a soft, comforting sweetness, while date powder adds a deeper caramel-like flavour.

Pour into your favourite mug, find somewhere comfortable and take a moment to enjoy it slowly.

Why Turmeric and Black Pepper?

Turmeric has been treasured for centuries and contains a natural compound called curcumin. Black pepper contains piperine, which can help the body absorb curcumin more effectively—which is why the two ingredients are so often paired.

Combined with pure cacao, they create a warming drink filled with naturally occurring plant compounds and minerals. More importantly, it offers something many of us need during the colder months: a reason to pause.

Make It Your Own

For an earthier drink, prepare it simply with water and date powder. For something creamier, use oat or coconut milk with vanilla and honey.

You can also add cinnamon for extra autumn warmth, ginger for a little heat or a tiny pinch of sea salt to deepen the chocolate flavour.

There is no single correct way to prepare cacao. Your daily cup can be simple, nourishing and completely personal.

A warming seasonal ritual for slower mornings, cosy evenings and everything autumn brings.
